The Foveaux Freighter was built by Gough Brothers of Invercargill in 2001. The Fouveaux Freighter has been specifically surveyed as a commercial freight carrier. The capacity of her hold is restricted by its physical dimensions and also the load line, which is displayed on the side of the vessel

The Foveaux Freighter was purpose built for marine carriage and features:-

• A large hold;
• A large hydraulic crane;
• Large fuel tanks to carry diesel for Stewart Island;
• Specialist petrol tanks to take petrol to Stewart Island.
